When can a player get a 2nd opinion?

Players have the right to receive a second medical opinion at the Team’s expense regarding the course of treatment for an injury, illness, or other medical condition that either: 

  • Has prevented a player from participating in a regular season, play-in, or playoff game for two (2) weeks or more;
  • In the Opinion of the Team physician, is likely to prevent the Player from being able to participate in an NBA game for two (2) weeks or more;
  • In the Opinion of the Team physician, will not be significantly aggravated by the Player continuing to participate in NBA games (or during the offseason participating in basketball without restriction) when the Player reasonably believes that continued participation will significantly aggravate his injury
  • Results in direction from the Team physician that the Player should undergo surgery 
  • Results in direction from the Team physician that the Player should not undergo surgery when the Player reasonably believes that surgery is necessary

How does a player schedule a 2nd opinion?

Who does a player need to tell that he's getting a 2nd opinion?

A player should notify the Team in writing of his decision to seek a second opinion and include the name of the physician who will be performing the evaluation, as well as the date and location of the evaluation. The Team will make relevant medical information regarding the Player available to the physician upon receiving the written notice. 

Who pays for the 2nd Opinion?

If the player complies with the steps above, the team will pay for all reasonable costs associated with the second Opinion.

What does concierge medical services entail?

The NBPA Player Health team has vetted service providers in physical therapy, athletic training, strength and conditioning, massage therapy, nutrition, and more. We are always available to connect players with service providers for off-season training and programming.
